Canal Haus chose CUTEK® ECO as the sustainable option.
Situated along a tranquil canal, the ‘Canal Haus’ exemplifies a harmonious blend of contemporary design and environmental stewardship. The residence’s sleek lines and open-concept layout not only create a spacious ambiance but also maximize the influx of natural light, reducing the need for artificial illumination.
A cornerstone of the project’s sustainability is the use of recycled Blackbutt timber. This choice not only repurposes durable hardwood but also imparts a rich, natural aesthetic to the home’s exterior. CUTEK® ECO was the coating of choice due its eco-friendly nature, which was a priority for the homeowners. CUTEK® ECO provides powerful timber protection and is a special-order product available for architects working on highly sustainable timber projects; in this case, it was specified by Maxa Design. When applied clear, CUTEK® ECO protects timber from moisture issues – such as cupping, warping and splitting – which are likely to occur in a waterfront environment. Furthermore, the architects spoke with our Lab to formulate a special custom CUTEK® Colourtone which was designed to complement the concrete elements of the structure, ensuring a cohesive visual appeal. The use of a CUTEK® Colourtone has not only elevated the aesthetic, but also provided UV protection to the coated timber. In contrast, in areas where the natural hue of the timber is showcased, clear CUTEK® ECO was applied instead, offering protection while allowing the wood’s inherent beauty to shine through as the timber greys over time in the sunlight.
The commitment to eco-friendliness for this project extends beyond material and product selection. The Canal Haus operates independently with its own water treatment plant, underscoring a dedication to self-sufficiency and minimal environmental impact. As such, this project has garnered significant recognition, securing the prestigious Design Excellence Award and being named National Building Design of the Year. Additionally, it has been featured in international publications, highlighting its innovative approach to sustainable living.
The Canal Haus stands as a testament to how thoughtful design and sustainable practices can coexist, resulting in a home that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible.
